Collaborative research with Jonathan Morduch of New York University. Project involves analysis of daily transactions data provided by SafeSave, a microfinance institution operating in Dhaka, and primary data collection on the poverty of clients. Final report, “Do Interest Rates Matter?: Credit Demand in the Dhaka Slums”, presented in Tokyo and forthcoming in Journal of Development Economics.

Report presented in Indonesia (Bank Indonesia), Korea (“New Challenges and Opportunities for the Post-Crisis Asia”) and at regional forums jointly organized by the ADBI and IDB. Training of Trainers on Microfinance-A Blended Distance Learning Course
February - May 2005
Collaborating with World Bank Institute’s Tokyo Distance Learning Center and the United Nations Capital Development Fund, designed a “blended learning” capacity building course, which combines different distance learning techniques – CD-ROM, on-line discussion and video conferencing - to train 130 participants from 8 countries (Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Vietnam, Philippines, East Timor, Japan, and the United States) on current best-practices in commercial microfinance. 20 participants became future course tutors in their own country.

Lead officer in charge of organizing capacity building and research conference on Modalities of Microfinance in Asia and Latin America. Workshop reviewed how the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have approached microfinance in the region and assessed the impact of microfinance programs in selected countries. Focus was on modalities of microfinance delivery, including the NGO approach, the banking approach and the credit union approach, in countries where ADB and IDB have significant microfinance programs in operation. Participants included 30 government officials and microfinance practitioners from ADB-supported NGOs and private banks.
